Episode 10 - Saving her daughter and building a new life.

Valeriya Horyayeva has experienced first-hand the horror of the Russian invasion of Ukraine

Early in 2022 life was going well for the married mother-of-one. Valeriya had her own social marketing company and business was good. Everything changed when the Russians attacked.

Separated from her husband, Sergii, who was in another part of the country on a skiing holiday, she had to get their daughter, Tereza, to safety. After spending days sheltering in the corridor of their apartment building – the idea being that, if a shell hit the building, the first two layers of walls would offer some protection – Valeriya, Tereza, and Valeriya’s grandmother made a run for it.

This week on Valeriya talks to Matt about their ordeal, the war’s impact on her family and friends at home, the threat of Russian disinformation, and her great affection for Nelson and New Zealand.
